BIBLE: Judges through Kings

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • List key events from the scriptures studied in chronological order, listing dates and scripture references where applicable.
  • Locate in the Bible the key events studied.
  • Recite the reasons given for the importance of significant dates or events covered in the study of Chronicles to Malachi & Job.
  • Recall important facts related to each event studied.
  • Locate on a map of the world the key places where biblical events occurred.
  • Articulate the fact that God has sovereignly led through all of Scripture.
  • Recognize Jesus as the central figure in each Old Testament story/event studied.
  • Memorize and quote key scripture passages that complement biblical events and theology studied.

  • Chanting and singing the series of events in chronological order

HISTORY: New Testament, Ancient Greece and Rome

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • List key events from the New Testament, Greece, and Rome in chronological order including dates and scripture references where applicable.
  • Recite the reasons given for the importance of significant dates or events covered in the study of the New Testament, Greece, and Rome.
  • Recall important facts related to each event studied.
  • Locate on a map of the world the key places where historical events occurred.
  • Explain the relationship between the Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, and Christians.
  • Describe the basic life-styles of people during this period of history, including dress, technology, vocations, religious practices, education, housing, and entertainment.

LITERATURE and VOCABULARY

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • Read orally and silently:

Demonstrating an ability to read unfamiliar words by using basic decoding skills.
Regularly participating in a schedule of oral and silent reading of literature. (This includes the SFS Boni Libri reading program as well as assigned class reading.)
Demonstrating an ability to comprehend and enjoy books with increasing levels of difficulty and complexity.
Practicing rhetoric by performing oral presentations (drama, oral reading, story-telling, etc.) in front of the class, parent groups, or other students. (An emphasis should be placed on proper diction, phrasing, inflection, etc. that promotes clear eloquent communication.)

  • Demonstrate vocabulary knowledge and comprehension by:

Memorizing definitions of selected vocabulary words and demonstrating an ability to recognize their meanings in more than one context including how they are used as various parts of speech.
Applying contextual clues, derivation of words with Latin roots, and use of the dictionary to determine vocabulary meaning.
Substituting vocabulary words for synonymous words or phrases while maintaining proper connotation within the given context.
Associating vocabulary words with real life/familiar situations and concepts.
Applying vocabulary words to written and oral presentations.

  • Correctly comprehend the literal and inferential meaning of selected literary works by:

Completing written work (essays, worksheet questions, drawing, etc.) that demonstrates comprehension.
Participating in group discussions.
Recognizing and identifying story types by the style of the literature.
Recognizing and identifying literary devices used in selected works of literature.
Recalling the qualities of the characters in stories and acknowledging those that are worth admiring.
Comparing/contrasting selected reading passages with biblical principles found in scripture.

  • Discussion about the book in large or small groups and answering oral and written questions
  • Using pictures, objects, projects, personal stories, guest speakers, and field trips to increase comprehension and vocabulary, relating as much as possible to the lives of the students
  • Provide time for silent reading and teacher or guest reading to students
  • Integrate with art, Bible, English grammar, history, Latin, etc.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • Comprehend basic sentence structure and recognize the use of sentences and paragraphs in written and verbal communication.
  • Differentiate between and properly punctuate statements, questions, exclamations, and commands.
  • Demonstrate a consistent, correct use of subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and direct objects and identify them in simple sentences.
  • Identify homonyms for given words.
  • Write the possessive forms of nouns with proper spelling and punctuation.
  • Recognize and correct run-on sentences and double negatives.
  • Compare and contrast being verbs with action verbs.
  • Consistently use correct capitalization and punctuation in a written sentence.
  • Correctly locate the complete and simple subject and predicate in a sentence.
  • Demonstrate clear and correct understanding of past, present, and future tense of verbs and be able to change verb tense in written and oral work.
  • Demonstrate correct use of grammar elements through proofing and editing his own and others’ written work.
  • Use basic research materials in addition to a thesaurus and dictionary.
  • Know how to find books in a library.

WRITING

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • Self-edit sentences and paragraphs.
  • Write short stories, fairy tales, fables, poetry, and expository essays using learned English grammar skills.
  • Summarize narrative stories.
  • Imitate well-written works to compose paragraphs, essays, and stories.

  • Imitation of well-written works to teach writing skills
  • Integration of other subjects in written and oral presentations

SPELLING

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • Use spelling rules to represent the various sounds in a word with the correct letters.
  • Translate phonetic sounds into standard spellings by interpreting phonetic spellings.
  • Spell grade appropriate words in given word lists by rote and application of spelling rules.
  • Use and spell grade appropriate words intelligently in written work.
  • Use words or word parts to properly form other words using the following concepts: syllable divisions, plural and compound nouns, verb forms, abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes, contractions, etc.
  • Satisfactorily and consistently apply spelling rules in assigned work (including other disciplines).

LATIN

Primary objectives—the students will be able to:

  • Correctly pronounce Latin letters and words using classical pronunciation.
  • Translate approximately one hundred foundational 1st and 2nd declension nouns, 1st conjugation verbs (the four principal parts), and 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Identify English derivatives from the Latin vocabulary they have learned.
  • Memorize and recite the present tense verb endings, the present tense of the irregular verb sum, esse and its English meaning.
  • Conjugate 1st conjugation verbs in the present tense and give their English meaning.
  • Memorize and recite 1st declension noun endings, 2nd declension noun endings, and 1st and 2nd declension adjective endings.
  • Decline 1st and 2nd declension nouns and give their English meanings.
  • Memorize the names of the five noun cases and spell them correctly.
  • Translate simple Latin sentences of the following constructions: subject-verb, subject-linking verb-predicate noun, and subject-linking verb-predicate adjective.
  • Memorize and recite famous Latin mottos or expressions.
  • Identify the twelve Olympian gods and goddesses with their Greek and Roman names.
  • Identify main figures in Roman history: Romulus and Remus, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Emperor Nero, Emperor Constantine.
  • Identify significant dates in Roman history: 753 BC—The Founding of Rome, 44 BC—The Assassination of Julius Caesar, 3 BC—The Birth of Jesus Christ, AD 476—The End of the Western Roman Empire.

MATH

Primary objectives – The students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding that God gave us numbers and mathematical systems to help us in life and to also help us understand his immutable (unchangeable) and logical character.
  • Complete all assigned math work/worksheets satisfactorily (75%+).
  • Memorize math facts using 0-12 with addition, subtraction and multiplication with 100% accuracy.
  • Complete written story problems involving up to two steps.
  • Solve beginning-level division, algebra, and geometry problems.
  • Use math skills to correctly recognize and use money.
  • Correctly add simple fractions.
  • Accurately describe and use standard and metric measurements.
  • Accurately estimate numbers to solve and check problems.

  • State that God is the Creator of the earth and all that is in it.
  • List the main systems of the human body.
  • Categorize body parts (organs) according to system.
  • Explain ways in which the different parts of the human body work together.
  • Describe the changes and growth in the life cycle of human beings.
